I remember the first time I went into a gym, I believe it was around 1997 and the gym was Gold’s Gym in East Boston. I was 26 years old
I never worked out at a gym before. I always did workout videos at home.
Remember Buns of Steel? I had the entire “Buns of” collection.
Bored of doing the same workouts over and over, I figured I’d join a gym.
I walked in to Gold’s Gym feeling really insecure. As I approached the front desk, this very large, muscular man wearing a muscle shirt looked me up and down and asked if I needed any help.
I shyly told him I was looking for a gym.
He walked me into the weight lifting area and showed me some equipment. Well, he used the equipement and I think he told me what body part they worked. I don’t remember.
Someone got his attention and he walked away leaving me there by myself. I didn’t know what to do, so I started looking at more equipment.
As I walked around, I looked toward the other side of the gym and noticed two women a little younger than me, wearing full makeup and hair done nice, pointing and laughing at me.
All I could think of is they were laughing because I was wearing a suit. I was a recruiter at the time and we had to wear suits. I had come right from work to check out the gym.
I felt my face getting hot. I quickly left feeling very embarrassed.
Needless to say, I never went back.
A few weeks later, my cousin Brenda invited me to take a step class with her at a gym she went to called Kathy’s Place. I was hesitant. I didn’t want to be laughed at again. But, I wanted to hang out with my cousin, so I went.
The woman at the front desk smiled and said hi when I walked in. She could see I was nervous, so she offered to show me around.
‘Oh, no…. here comes being ridiculed before I even start’, I thought.
She walked me around and asked me about myself. What I did for work; where I lived; had I exercised before,; did I know anyone that was a member there; and what my goals were…. she really seemed interested in getting to know me.
I saw my cousin standing by a closed door with music blasting from behind it. I explained to the woman that I was there to take a step class with my cousin.
She walked me over to the group exercise room. I hugged my cousin. The door opened and all these woman came out smiling and laughing.
Not laughing at anyone. Laughing because they had fun.
The woman then introduced me to the guy who was teaching the step class. His name was Rob and he was originally from Australia.
He shook my hand, smiled and helped find a step and get set up.
I was a member of Kathy’s Place for 8 years, until I moved to Maine.
When I started Nerdy Girl Fitness, I wanted it to be just like Kathy’s Place. A gym you could go to where people knew your name, cared about you and your goals and everyone made you feel comfortable.
And, that is what Nerdy Girl Fitness/Fit Club is still like today.
While we do our workouts online now, we still get to know all of our members well. We still care about your goals. We still help you when you struggle.
The reason I’m telling you my story is because many women are hesitant to do an online workout with us. I think they feel embarrassed or that they will be laughed at.
To prove that online workouts can be as fun as in person workouts, I am inviting all of you to try an online workout with us for FREE. Join anytime this week.
We hold online sessions M, T, and Th at 8am and at 5:30pm.
